Pretty common theme last winter at the ole Stoddard Gill Factory. Smaller Gills compared to years prior that is.....Part of the problem last year putting good size fish on the ice at Stoddard was the fact we had record flooding in Aug 2007. That highwater caused much of the water vegitation to die off 6 weeks earlier than the norm. The veg is one of the key ingredients that attract the gills to these rock line fields just north of Stoddard. The other part of the problem is the heavy fishing pressure this area receives. It's nothing to see 100+ bucketeers on the ice at Stoddard on a December Saturday morning for the past 2 or 3 years now.
Fished Sat. and Sun. Hammerd the gills. Not as big as the past years, but nice 8-9 inch gills, a couple big perch 13 inches, one nice crappie 12 inches. Took home my limit.
