River Tactics Species, Techniques, Gear etc.

New to living in South Central Wisconsin (specifically Janesville area). While I am thrilled with the seemingly endless opportunities the area seems to have, I realize I am seriously lacking in any real knowledge of river fishing tactics. While I'm not a complete amateur, I've fished the majority of my life, it's been mostly suburbia (hidden in the open) style ponds and forest preserve lakes. Thats what we call parks with water access on the Illinois side.
Aside from the most basic (slip/bell sinker rig.s w/crawlers etc. for cats, jigs n minnow/crawler for walleye, white bass) I find myself seriously lacking any real river knowledge. I'm not askin anyone give up they're hot spots (believe me I fished Chicagoland I understand the destructive power of public info on a sweet hotspot)I am simply interested in learning what, when, and how to locate (what to look for) the where. You know baiting options, gear, species that sort of thing. Something to get me on the right track is all I can ask. I have no species preference per say just a love for fishing. And catch and release is just responsible fishing!!!!
