My brother Kenneth and longtime clients Jim Lewinski Sr. and Jim Lewinski Jr. started out the day yesterday drifting the breaklines with Lindy Rigs. That produced zip! They hit several spots but nothing happening there. They finally ended up getting the boards and spinners out for the last 3 hours of the day and ended up with 5 "quality" sized walleye. Guests Joe Volpe and Rick Palasek were working the weeds and reefs yesterday and ended up with 9 nice eaters (sorry, no picture). They went back to the same program today and caught 8 more (picture). The average size was much bigger today though. Joe said "if you were not in the weeds, you were not catching fish". Here's a couple pictures of big and little Jim from yesterdays trip (and video) and a picture of the walleye Joe and Rick caught today.

My brother Kenneth and his clients struggled on Tuesday. Not surprising after the cold front went through and dropped the water temp. 6-8 degrees. I think they ended up with 7 nice eater walleye and a couple really nice perch. Today they actually had a good bite but came off the water a couple times when the weather looked bad. Ended up with 9 keeper walleye today and a couple nice smallmouth. The video is from Tuesday, and the picture is from today (before they went back out). Good luck on the water folks...

Monday with south winds, my brother and his clients managed 8 nice keeper walleye. Should have had more as they had a bunch come unhooked for some reason. Yesterday, my brother Kenneth and his clients struggled bad only catching one keeper walleye and a 40 inch pike ( which they released). Lots of throwbacks, but only the one keeper 'eye. Damn north winds!!! Blowing pretty good from the north again today. Hopefully we get some south winds again before too long. I did speak to a local yesterday that has been catching some really nice perch near the Day's River with the best depth being 13-15 feet. He has also been catching quite a few nice eating size pike in the 26-30 inch range. From what I've heard, not much happening yet on salmon between Escanaba and the Ford River can. I would think that action should be starting anytime though. Then again, this year is kind of strange with the very cold spring and early summer we had, so who knows...

My brother Kenneth and his clients had a heck of a good time yesterday morning landing 28 keeper walleye by 10:30 am. Once again they caught all their fish pitchin' jigs in 6-10 feet of water. Hopefully the good bite continues...

My brother Kenneth and his clients pitched jigs today for some shallow water walleye. The best color on the jigs was green and they were fishing in 4-10 feet of water with weeds nearby. Eight more days and then the days start getting shorter, better get out there folks before summer is gone!!!

The bite is holding up pretty good on Little Bay de Noc despite the EVIL cold front that went through. The video is from my brother's charter yesterday, and the picture is from todays trip. Yesterday, they caught all their fish trolling spinners and crawlers. Today, they drifted with Lindy Rigs. Kenneth said no particular color combination has really stood out. Good luck on the water folks...

Mike Williams and his friend Cody caught their limit pretty quick today. I saw them just before they headed out on the water and I don't think they were out for much more than a couple hours or so. They said they caught them trolling spinners and crawlers in fairly shallow water. I forgot to ask what the hot color was. Hopefully Mike will let us know because it obviously worked!!! Congrats guys...

Stick shot videoOn the water video
My brother Kenneth and his clients had a heck of a time catching keeper walleye yesterday. They caught a butt load of fish, just not many keepers ending the day with 7 walleye. They went through better than 7 dozen crawlers!!! Today, they ended up with 10 keepers and they were much bigger fish too. Anyway, here is some "on the water video" from yesterday plus "loading the stick" video from today. Good luck on the water folks...

Guest Don Failing and his friend (forgot his name) said it wasn't fast and furious this morning, but very steady. Don said they were still biting when they reached their limit at 10:00 this morning. They were trolling spinners and crawlers (no boards) in 6-10 feet of water. Congrats guys!!!

I was very surprised my brother Kenneth and his clients even went out yesterday with the winds gusting to 30 mph. But his clients didn't want to give in to mother nature. So off they went. Actually turned out to be a pretty good day. I tested out a camera that I hope to use to record fishing charters from start to finish. Need to make a few tweeks, but overall, not too bad (except for the wind noise!). Pretty good bite right now on Little Bay de Noc. Many limits caught by our guests the past few days. Have a great weekend everyone...

Well, after yesterday's ridiculous winds, my brother Kenneth was hoping today would be nicer. And nicer it was! The wind was much more manageable today, especially in the early morning. He had Dale DeWildt and his son Mark out again and they had a much better bite. As they were working on getting their third line out... the first board dropped back and soon after that the second board went back. Just like that they had two keepers in the box in the first 2 minutes of fishing. They proceeded to land another 5 or six keepers while trolling harnesses behind bottom bouncers in the upper bay. They lost several real nice fish too, not sure why, but they had a lot of fish come un-buttoned today. The wind really started to crank up around noon, so they switched over to drifting with floating jig heads tipped with crawler halves and managed to land a bunch more fish in deeper water. Most of the fish caught on harnesses came from 17 to 20 fow and all of their fish caught drifting came from 27-29 feet of water. Many guests of ours staying at the resort have been doing well also, with most of the fish averaging 16 to 19 inches. They did release a 23 1/2 incher today, that has been the biggest fish in his first two charters. A few nice perch have been caught as well. Here's some pictures from today's trip. Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area.

I went out this evening to mainly fish for Burbot once it got dark. Unfortunately, my heater ran out of gas just as it got dark!!! But I had enough action before it got dark to still make it a fun evening...
A solid 8-10 inches of ice everywhere north of Gladstone. We did have a quad break through the ice near Saunder's Point, but the Saunder's, Hunter's, and Squaw Point areas are dangerous even in the coldest of winters due to the heavy currents moving thru those areas. The mouth of the Whitefish River is another danger spot to stay away from. Anyway, both the walleye and perch fishing have got off off to a great start this season. Those fishing for perch are getting some real dandies too with lots of 10-12 inchers and even some 14 inchers. The walleye fishing has been best on the northern half of the upper bay. The water is much dirtier than normal and that seems to be attracting the walleye to the the north end. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow and will post results if I do...

My wife Theresa and I got on the ice for the first time this afternoon and were set-up and fishing by 3:00. I left her in the shack with a video camera running while I went and sat on a bucket about 30 yards away just so we could try two spots at the same time. She was in 28 feet of water and it was about 30 feet where I was. I had two keepers by 4:00! Theresa lost her first fish and admitted he horsed it a little because it was her first one of the season. But she then caught a nice 18 incher to go with my 3 keepers of 16, 18, and 24 inches. I was going to let the 24 incher go until I realized "she" was a "he" after looking at it more while unhooking it. So in the box it went! So all in all, not a bad start. I went 5 for 5 total releasing a couple 10 inch dinks. My first fish came on the #8 Holographic Purple Ice Darter and the other two on #9 Green Glow Tiger Jiggin' Raps. I think (not positive) Theresa had her fish hit the #8 Holographic Blue/Green Ice Darter. We went out from the Vagabond and had 4-6 inches of ice. The fish were actually much more active when we first got out and I think they might be feeding all day long due to the water being much more stained than usual. I would love to be able to stay out the whole day and find out if I'm right! One of these days...

I only spoke to one guy that braved the weather on the bay this weekend and he said there was only 2 1/2 to 3 inches of ice where he was fishing. Hopefully most of the 8 inches or so of new snow that we got blew off so it can add some ice during the up coming cold snap. We'll keep you posted...

Wow, slack off on the reports, and come back to a whole new site (looks good Eric). Anyway, just wanted to let folks know that the upper portion of Little Bay de Noc from Gladstone north has froze over with a couple shacks seen already between the Kipling pier and Butler's Island. It just froze yesterday, so I'm not really recommending anyone go flying out there!!! Just letting folks know that it will probably be walkable in most areas by this weekend. If not this weekend, definately next weekend...We'll keep you posted!

I saw a couple guys setting tip-ups on Nelson's Bay this morning! I guess the weeds are really making it tough to drill holes though because they keep binding up the augers. I told him to take a weedwacker with next time... All kidding aside, not much happening on the water. Just too darn windy!!! Have guys here prefishing for the MWC Tourney next weekend and most have just been relaxing the last couple days. One guy did catch a couple eaters on Big Bay his first day here, but hasn't been able to get back out since. This wind is nasty. The water level has dropped close to 15 inches I would say. Can't wait to see what the water temperature has dropped down too...
Another great day on the bay today as my brother Kenneth had long time clients Denny Gustafson and Jim Lewinski from the Chicago with him. They got on the water around 6:30 a.m. and Kenneth said it was pretty fast and furious the first two hours of the day, then when the wind really kicked up, but the fishing slowed. Kenneth was really looking forward to the wind kicking up, because that usually turns the fish on big time and he thought they would have a fantastic day fishing. He's glad they got out there early, because the later it got, the slower it got. They did manage to get their 15 fish limit of really nice walleyes and released some beautiful smallies as well. They caught all their fish drifting with floating jig heads tipped with just a small 2 inch piece of night crawler. They called it a day shortly after 1 p.m. and headed back to the resort. Hopefully the cold front moving through tonight doesn't shut the fish down too much as they will be back out there again tomorrow. Good luck on the water folks...

My brother Kenneth fished with Tim and Cindy from the Monroe area of lower Michigan and Tom Janks from right here in Rapid River. They left the Gladstone Yacht Harbor around 6:30 a.m. and headed out to troll harnesses behind bottom bouncers. Kenneth left a pretty good slug of fish on Sunday and figured they'd be in the same area. Boy was he wrong! They fished for three hours with only one keeper and a few undersized fish. Then Kenneth put the trolling gear away, and ventured to a weedbed that's been getting pounded by the wind the last few days and got out the drifting rods. In the next hour and a half they put 13 more fish in the boat. The quality of fish was awesome, with all but 4 fish being 18 to 22 1/2 inches. My brother love's drifting with floating jig heads tipped with 1/2 crawlers, it's probably his 2nd most favorite way to fish for walleyes. Jigging would be his favorite! It was a little windy to start the day, but by the time they got back to the dock around noon it was beautiful out there. It sure pays to be versatile when fishing. The water temperature dropped 7 degrees since Sunday's major cold front and Kenneth thought the bite might be tough, but by slowing down and putting something right in their face, they ended up having a pretty decent trip.

Another great 5 hr. trip this morning for my brother Kenneth and his guests. Longtime client Dale DeWildt came back up from Appleton and brought his friend Paul to get in on the fun. They waited a little while for the rain to move out and then hit the water around 7 a.m.. It was pretty rough this morning, and they had to use both 60 inch drift socks to slow them down while drifting with floating jig heads tipped with crawler halves. Paul had never fished that way for walleyes before, but Kenneth said he soon got the hang of it and ended up having the hot hand at putting fish in the boat. Dale finally caught up and started catching some nice fish too. My brother on the other hand...well, he was doing a great job at losing fish today. He just told the guys he was being nice and didn't want to show them up! With all the fish that came off today, Kenneth said they should have had over 20 keepers. They ended up landing 13 walleye while drifting but then lost their wind. They made one short trolling pass the last 1/2 hr. with bottom bouncers and harnesses and picked up their last two fish and headed in. Good luck on the water folks...
