Hey guys,

I am in the process of purchasing a boat and am trying to understand some of the salmon setups utilized on Lake Michigan.

Since the boat I'm getting is relatively small, I figured that on average I'd run two planers, two leadcores and two rigger lines. possibly one wire line since I had the setup already.

I understand the basic braided line dipsey setup but need clarification on two things……first, do you run a leader from the braided line to the dipsy or just tie the braided line direct to the dipsy? Secondly, when you look at the packages for the dipsys, Luhr Jensen suggests keeping the dipsy fairly close to the flasher but the guys I see usually have their dipsy somewhere between 8 and 10ft away. What is the overall correct distance from the dipsy to the flasher?

Now regarding planer boards and leadcore……I understand the whole idea behind having different core setup’s, say 10 color, 8 color, 6 color, etc., but does that mean you are setting the in-line planer on the backing fairly close to where the leadcore ends or do you provide some distance away from the leadcore? Secondly, how much of a leader do you typically use from the end of the leadcore to your flasher, spoon, etc?

Lastly, do you have an over distance you use for the leaders between flashers and flies vs dodgers and flies? I think the flasher might require a bit longer lead but just want to be sure.

These are the questions I really need help with because I understand the process and reasoning behind the setup’s but am not sure regarding the specifics. It would really stink if I had all the right gear but ran the dipsy or flasher too close to the leadcore or braided lines and kept fish from hitting my presentations.

Thanks in advance to all for you assistance. It is really appreciated

Braid directly to dipsey and then mono or fluorcarbon off as the leader. You must use a snubber on the mono side of dipsey to absorb some of the impact when using braid. If you are using a flasher, you want to have a 18-24 inch leader between fly and flasher and then as long a leader between dipsey and flasher as possible, this will depend on rod length. Some guys use slide divers to get more distance. After the lead core you want a fairly long leader (20'). You never put board on leadcore line. The further away from leadcore you put board, the deeper line will run (just like a snap weight).....but I am not sure exactly where the planer board needs to be to get leadcore to run at an exact depth. I should probably talk to walleye guys. Some people have told me to put board just before leadcore and other say you need 30 feet of mono between board and leadcore to get right depth, I have always just put board as close to leadcore as possible.
