Ha guys, new to the site, but have been a fan for a while now. I undestand that the Menominee River downtown has a warm water discharge that keeps the rivers water temps nice even throughout the winter. My question is what kind of fish could one target should I venture out onto the river. the itch for open water needs scratching. I would be going out in my boat. Any info would help out a bunch.

Thank You,
Carl

p.s. hows the landing looking?

From what I understand is the hot spot right now to fish open water from a boat is to launch at the National Ave and Water St launch. Follow the river out to the harbor and turn right as soon as you clear the wall. Go down the wall on the harbor side about three quarters of the way, you will see quite a difference in the wall, that is where the warm water discharges into the harbor. Spawn, jigs, gulp, spoons, and minnows all produce great. If weather permits, trolling out towards, and around the gap will produce too.

Good luck.

Fish Lips, thanks for the info. I am looking more towards fishing the river itself, as I understand water temps can range from upper 40's to upper 60's. Thought maybe some bass or pike may be available.

the closer you get up river to the powerplant, the more and more carp you will find in my experience. There have been days up the menom. river at the powerplant where carp are just boiling about the surface and they get huge.

Pike can be caught in the river, as well as smallies and walleye, and at certain times the trout can be found.

The water is super warm way up by the powerplant and very turbulent. I have never gotten anything around the powerplant besides carp but i know for a fact that the other species can be found down stream from there just gotta explore. Most popular spots are around the mmsd offices where there are almost always a few guys fishing, mostly minnows for pike etc.

thats really all i know. I would rather go under the hoan or at the lighthouse for shore fishing though because i would rather get a steelie or brown than i pike/bass/walleye/carp --- those can all be had at the hoan and lighthouse as well though.
