Here is a thread for the years 2009 and 2010 so feel free to post as many fish pictures you want. I am sure we will see some great photos.

Tonight I was fishing a Milwaukee County Park pond for stocked trout and I nailed this 19 inch beast. It probably would have reached 20 inches in length but it's tail was all torn up. By what I do not know. I was using a 10 foot ultralight rod with 6 pound test so it was a fun battle. I gave it to someone else because he would'nt not stop bleeding unfortunatly. But what a fish for such a small pond. It was caught hook/line/sinker/corn. The fish were not responding to small spinners or spoons, and that sucks because I love catching them on artificials....

Here are some pics from the past week.

1) Chunky Bass caught on a ultralight rod. Only 14 inches long but very chunky.

2) A nice 18 inch bass caught at a park pond. My arm looks broken

3) 16 inch walleye my fiance Michelle caught last sunday at the Rock River.

4&5) Rock River Sunrise....BEAUTIFUL!!!!

The 19 inch trout in the other report was also caught this week. It's been fun fishing them trout and bass this week from shore. Wish I had a boat though....

Maybe Eric needs to move this forum over into the fishing reports and get a fresh photos page going perhaps???:) The old 2007/2008 Fish Pics page is still there so, we need an updated forum for pics over there in the fishing repoprt forums.....

Fished McKinley pier for 5 hours and my I had 2 solid strikes, my fiance lost a big fish, and I started aggressively snap jigging a Moonshine glow spoon and right infront of the wall a giant fish hits. So after fightingthe fish to the surface I see the fish and think it is the state record smallmouth because of it's size and body shape. Once we got the fish in the net and the light on it, I can't believe my eyes. A GIANT SHEEPSHEAD!!!! That fish nailed that spoon, and I was snap jigging it super hard. That was the action for the night........

Caught 2 female browns today filled with skein and loose eggs. I am now happy I have some brown trout skein now for november fishing and icefishing for the harbor browns. The skeins are cured and ready for spawn sacs. This rain amd weather has the browns showing up in high numbers and they can be finessed into biting or, aggravated into striking baits. The salmon are dieing out slowly but there is still fish around. Hope this brown skein catches some steelhead this ice season as well. Good Luck everyone, still lots of fishing left to come.....

Last week's walleye my fiance Michelle landed on the Rock River. The only giant of Fall of 2009 so far. And the only legal walleye this year from the Rock for us. The 2nd biggest walleye of 2009 is one I caught earlier this year that measured 26 inches long. Here are the photos of her 27" walleye, the 26" I landed this past spring, and a few other nice photos of walleyes we landed this past year......

Got a few nice steelhead yesterday, with the male jumping numerous times and putting up quite a fight. Simply awesome on the fly rod.

I'm going to do it gotta stop by Pat at the Fly fishers and get a tune up on what I need again. I sold my Sage, Loomis and everything I had about 12 years ago........................................

I think I'll start with a 6 or7 weight to make it fun maybe in a 8-9 footer...

Here we go again!

I started fly fishing for these bad boys about 5 years ago and i've been hooked ever since, though it doesn't mean I wont go back and forth between bobber drifting and fly fishing!!! I use a 9ft 8wt prestige and love it!! I'll probably head out with it finally next weekend!!!

I will, I used to flyfish a bunch when I was a tenager and early 20's but that all changed when I learned how to float fish... I see myself doing the same thing going back and forth.

I would love to start fly fishing. If I wanted to fish trout, salmon, bass, and pike, what would a great setup be as far as line, reel, and rod goes for fly fishing?

pmjasper
11-20-2009, 06:51 AM
I'm not sure if there is one true setup for all the fish mentioned, but in doing a good deal of research on Great Lakes Steelheading, and the preferred setup useed throughout the Great Lakes, I chose a 7wt, 10ft rod for easier mending of line while nymphing and drifting indicator rigs with eggs flies and nymphs. I matched up my rod with a Sage 1680 reel with Rio's floating Nymphing line. I utilize 10 foot homemade leaders from 25 lb test tapered down to 8lb test usually. Two nymph setup or an egg and nymph is a good start.

I also wanted a sink tip line for swinging streamers and ESL's, and again with a lot of research picked up a spare spool and Teeny's MiniTip+ line, which is an 8ft sinking head. I spoke to Pat Ehlers, who helped develop this line, for the tributaries and lakes around Wisconsin and really sold me on it versus say a Versitip type line, with many different sinking heads.

Last weekend was my first time really fishing using the new setup and the couple of fish I caught really made my day. Hope to be back out tomorrow giving it a shot....once I find that damn leak in my waders.

BTW...the initial setup ran me about $275, which I guess in this day and age is fair. It cost me another $100 for the spare spool and sink tip line but sinking leaders are cheaper and also an option for this style of fishing. Now while you could go cheaper, buying a pre-packaged setup, the gear I purchased I designed for the rigors of steelheading and so far I'd say so good.

If i can help anyone along the way let me know and I'll try my best.

Thanks alot for the info. I can imagine that rod could handle pike and bass just fine if it handles steelhead. I will look into that setup and try to see what suits me best. I was thinking of throwing streamers, egg sucking leeches, poppers, and all kinds of flies for the bigger fish. But in the fuure I want to try wild stream trout fishing also. Alot of technique in the sport but, it is that challenge that draws me to the idea of fly fishing.....

I think a lot of the mystery has gone away from fly fishing. I'm 35 yrs old and when I first got started into fly fishing, the experts made it seem like you had to be an entomologist or an expert caster to really be effective. Totally not true. If you're looking for one overall rod, I would stay with a 9ft over the 10ft. It will definitely be more suited for all around fishing you want to do. A good number of companies, such as Scientific Anglers, offer fly fishing combos that are complete for around $100. Now while they might give in some areas, they are sufficent to take a number of fish. For what you are looking to do, I would say their Bass Combo would do a nice job in all but the wild trout situations. That being said, I've caught plenty of trout on very cheap combos that totalled around $35. The reason here is that you don't need the fine drag systems required for pike, steelhead and salmon and the large capacity reels as well. Look into these complete setups and if you need any more guidance give me a shout.

I was planning on getting a really good setup for the big fish, and then for the panfish and stream trout I was gonna get a setup for $40-$80. Big bluegills on a 10 foot ultralight are really fun, so on a lighter action fly rod they have to be a blast. By the way, I posted these pics earlier this year already but, these were the first wild trout I ever landed and, they actually fight really hard for their size. I caught them on a hand tied 1/32 ounce black hair jig with the barb pinched down to be sure they were released unharmed. Just these 3 fish and the fact I seen other trout boiling for insects all over the place made me interested in fly fishing. I already cast really good with a fly rod, I practiced with a fly rod my dad used to have and it was not hard at all. The real technique is picking proper flies for the fishing situation you are given. Thanks for the help again, I really appreciate the info alot. Take care and good luck to you on the water.......

Nice fish. I used to fish for wild trout in NJ. Absolutely beautiful brook trout and the nicest rainbow trout I ever caught. It truly looked like the model rainbow trout with silver sides, a wonderful crimson stripe on either side and black dots covering it's body. I too caught it on a 1/32 oz home-made white jig. Anything else I can help you with let me know.

Some whitebass caught on medium sized Cleo spoons. First year I caught more whitebass on spoons and crankbaits over streamer flies and softplastic curly tailed grubs. They slammed the Cleos so hard the rod would almost get ripped from your hands at times. Nothing wrong with a fish that fights extremely hard and tastes great out of cold water. Better then crappies out of cold water, even a warm water crappie gets mushy and muddy tasting. Anyone who talks down on whitebass for any reason either doesn't eat fish or, dont know how to cook to begin with. These fish are just as good as walleye, bluegills, and northern pike. I wont put them against perch though, perch are my favorite fish to eat.

But Whitebass is still awesome to eat, just get them before they hangout in warm water for to long, and fillet the small brownish mudline off the fillets and they are great tasting. Not trying to start a debate or be a jerk, but there is no denying these fish are awesome to catch and eat. Dont listen to people's superstitions or blind and pointless hatred towards whitebass because God knows these fish get a bad reputation. If you like panfish and walleyes you will like whitebass, no difference at all. I never once got a complaint from anyone when I cook fish, and whitebass is a common fish we eat ...

Finally after mounting countless trophy fish for other anglers I get a trophy of my own. This 47" tiger muskie came just after noon last saturday on Lake Namakagan near cable Wis.

This is the 3rd tiger all of my years and what is really weard is after pounding the water year after year and it seams like it is in fact a fish of 10,000 casts, but I couldn't wait to put it (not a he or a she) back!

Luckily a boat with a couple anglers from Ashland and Florence were nearby to help with the picture taking and measuring so that I could kep (it) alive.

This is the fish that I have always dreamt about catching.
