Lately I have been poking around for some largemouth and notice one thing about their attitudes this past week. They have been very lethargic. I tried crankbaits, wacky worming, and so on and found the best way to go about getting my fish is a smaller 3 inch creature bait like a YUM Beavertail, Wooly Hog Craw, and baits like that.
Use a super line like braided Power Pro or Fireline, or a high quality mono or flourocarbon in at least 10 pound test. Use a 1/16-1/8 ounce bullet sinker Texas Rigged with the plastic and lightly flip or pitch these baits on the edges of the weeds, slop, pads, and into the open pockets and fish it slowly.
This is how I have got them to strike.........

Bass are on a Topwater bite in the early mornings and late evenings into night. Rapala Skitterwalks, Zara Spooks, Propbaits, buzzbaits around the heavy weeds, boat docks, the shallow flats, and lily pads are doing great. Even try a Floating Original Rapala twitched or reeled just slow enough to make a wobbling wake on the surface.
Daytime tactics vary from day to day. I have caught fish on splitshot rigged leeches and nightcrawlers while fishing bluegills, on softplastics like Texas Rigged ringworms, shakey jigheads with finness worms, and wack wormed Senko plastics on a standard wacky worm hook or a jighead around the deeper 12-20 foot weed edges. And dropshot rigging GULP minnows, Powerbait Realistic minnows, and so on on the weed edges and deep rock/weed area is holding up great.
Crankbaits like Rapala DT-10 in 10-14 feet of water have been great, and DT-16 in 15+feet of water. Try ticking the tops of the weeds or banging bottom with the lip of the crankbaits, and stop the bait a few times throughout the retrieve.
Good luck outthere..........

With this coldfront this week I am guessing the bass have been in a very negative mood. This means fishing slower, working harder, and paying close attention to your presentation. The fish are on a feeding binge but, their matabolisms are dropping so they like easier meals more then meals that are getting away.
Plastic worms Texas Rigged, threaded on a jighead, or carolina rigged fished at a slow pace with frequent and long pauses will produce some fish. I know when bass both smallmouth and largemouth go into negative mode I like fishing them with a medium or medium/light action spinning rod with 8-10 pound test flourocarbon. I would go with a straight tail worm in 4-6 inches on a 1/16-1/8 ounce jighead or shakey jighead. In clear waters I like using black, pumpkinseed, white, smoke, and colors that mimic leeches, nightcrawlers, crayfish, and minnows. In murky water try something a tad bit brighter with orange, chartreuse, or whites in the color mixture. Also, wacky worming SENKO style plastics can be great but remember, FISH SLOWER!!!!!!!
Another tactic that works is jig/pork combos and spider grubs. I had success slowly dragging and pausing a 1/2 ounce football head jig with a smoke colored spider grub this time of year.
The last thing I will mention is fishing shallow or deep with 4-6 inch suckers or chubs. Fishing in 4-8 feet with a bobber and big minnow or, with a slipsinker LINDY RIG can be deadly in deeper water. The fish can be anywhere from 4-35 feet of water so have your bait in the strike zone. A nice active sucker or chub fished slowly can account for not only bass but, pike, walleyes, or a occasional musky.
Good luck outthere, I thought I would update this forum........
