Hello Everyone,
I see many folks using the Berkeley "Fireline" product. Some rave about it, others wouldn't have it. For those of you that use it, or have used it, what do you think? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks for your thoughts.

I like it for trolling and vertical jigging. I would not use it on any rod that I cast.

Thanks BigMusky. I appreciate the feedback. With help from folks like yourself, I'm learning slowly but surely.

Again, a beginner question.....thanks for any feedback.
If you use Fireline, or any other flouro for that matter, is it standard practice to tie your lure or jig directly to the Fireline? Or is it best to put a mono leader on?
Thanks,
Johnn

fireline is not fluorocarbon.... it is more similar to Spiderwire UltraCast or Power Pro. Fluorocarbon is super clear line with special refractive qualities so light bends same amount as in water making it invisible..looks like mono on self but much different in water.
I have caught fish with a leader and without. My general rule is if I am finesse fishing in clear water then I will put a mono/fluoro leader on. If I am fishing with cranks, spinnerbaits, etc or jigging in a river then I do not use a leader. Many people never use leaders, even fishing plastics for bass in gin clear water and still do well....so it is just a personal preference and what you have confidence in. I will say this...do not use a leader if you do not have to. It complicates rig and adds a weak point.

I use the stuff often ecspecially in dirty water. Typically I will always tie on a florocarbon leader but many fellow fisherman do not. there are times I will also troll with it ecspecially in snaggy area's or river etc... it will get smaller cranks down deeper due to the thin diameter. It works well for me in many applications, give it a try.

I use Fireline 20/8 or Power Pro 15/4 on the Mississippi for all techniques & species. In the fall of the year when water clarity is little better I'll run an 18" to 22" leader of Vanish when chunking cranks or drift jigging. I made the switch from mono due to breakoffs. % has gone down dramatically. I've paid a little extra attention to eye guides on my rods and have yet to come across an issue. Some claim the braided material will chew up the ceramic over time.

I use 30# fireline on the slidediver rods and it seems to do the job well, only had one break off this year but we really cranked the drag down tight and it snapped right at the backing knot. wish I could of seen that one!! I use a 5 ft. 30# floro leader on it also.

I use it a bunch for slop fishing with frogs. Jigging, ecspecially dirty water, and casting. At times I will use a florocarbon leader and other times not. Great Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fireline is a great product. I've been using Fireline crystal on my spinning gear - 8 lb tipped with florocarbon leader. You can pull it through just about anything.

I've been using Fireline almost exclusively for about the past 15 years. The majority of people I talk to prefer PowerPro, but I have put them side to side and my personael preference is Fireline. There are so many advantages of having no stretch in your line, although it does take some getting used to. Mono can be more forgiving at times, but once you acclimate to Fireline the pros outweigh the cons IMO. For fluro, I only use in select bodies of water, depending on presentation. When live bait, jig, or plastic fishing on Lake Geneva using fluro will really boost your catch rate. On lakes with a slight tinge though, most of the time I can get away with tying direct. I am always amazed at what I can away with throwing and fish I can land on 6lb. I have reverted to going to 4lb for plastics and that line too can handle quite a load too.

Power Pro hands down whoops Fireline everyday of the week, month, and year. It is stronger, limper, more abrasion resistant, smoother, and lasts alot longer then Fireline. Everyone has their preferences but I have tried Fireline, Stren Braid, and Spiderwire, and in the end Power Pro wins the competition. Suffix Braid is a close 2nd to Power Pro.
Fireline is way to stiff, and it whistles through your guides like a mini saw blade. Berkley has some outstanding products but, Fireline is not one of them in my eyes. Sure if I was endorsed by them I would take the Fireline for free but, I would rather drop my money on some great fishing line like POWER PRO!!!! And talk about sensitivity. I can tell a bite from a rock, twig from a bite, and mud from rock, weeds, and so on.
As said before, in clear water use a flourocarbon leader. About 3-6 feet is good but, 3 feet is better obviously if you attach the leader to a swivel. It is slightly hard casting a lure with 6 feet of line hanging from your rod tip. Like I said, if you want a durable, quality, great fishing line then purchase PowerPro....

I love fireline crystal. I use 10 lb. with a 15 lb. flouro leader. i have never had any problems. I just lost the ability to snip it with my teeth. i will have to try the power pro. its just, the fireline lasts so long, i will have to wait till next season. i have heard good and bad about that stuff too. its like a ford chevy thing i guess.

i was a big fan of the fire line crystal. but i will be switching to power pro due to issues i have had lately with fire line. if a tangle does happen, fireline seems to frey in the line, not on the ends. after seeing this, i at least need to give power pro a shot. i felt power pro on a buddies set up and liked how smooth it felt. hope i like it.

I like using fireline and powerpro but run into a lot of people who will literally yell and me for using it in crowded fishing situations saying it will cut all of there lines up and to get that crap out of there. This comes from mostly older gentleman who are pretty much set in there ways. Obviously I have to just shake it off and try extra hard not to get tangled in their lines. Any one else run into these type of problems.:(
